Description
The image of Pelicans flying (or resting) at sunset is one of those sights that have become very much associated with the upper Gulf of Mexico Coast in the US.
From northern Texas Gulf Coast all to Louisiana and the Florida panhandle, there is certainly a long held vision that I have of gloriously long summers days morphing into the evening and ending with a bright orange sky lighting up the beaches, marshes, and piers that are so common along this coastline. For me, there is an intangible like quality so commonly attached to the lifestyle on the Gulf Coast. It is a different, relaxed atmosphere , one that is so familiar with coastal towns. It may sound a little like I am day dreaming here, but images of pelicans during sunset seem to be one of the advantages to living in the sub-tropical climate of the Texas and Louisiana.
Getting silhouetted images of pelicans set against the sunset, though, has not been an easy task for me, and of course you have to be facing into the get the best opportunities. In Texas, though, particularly near Galveston Island and San Luis Pass, there are plenty such opportunities near the GIWW, with wetland so close nearby.
This shot was taken with a Nikon D800, and Nikkor 70-300mmVR lens, at 300mm focal length. Very little post processing was required for this image, such were the ideal conditions on the night at San Luis Pass.
