Description
One of the many distinguishing and culturally rich characteristics of St Charles Avenue is the way the more affluent residents really push the boat out and decorate many of the Greek Revival style mansions at Christmas.
This particular dwelling, near State Street in uptown New Orleans, doesnt quite have the same grandeur as some of its larger and older neighbors, but the gardens certainly did look extremely good for the holiday season decorations.
I had walked along a good length of St Charles Avenue that night with my DSLR, tripod and cable shutter release in hand, looking for appropriate subjects for a long exposure. This particular house caught my eye. I felt that the usual array of live oak trees, far from spoiling the view, actually looked quite good in silhouette in this long exposure.
This exposure was around 30 seconds in length, at ISO 100 and f/11. I composed the scene to allow some of the passing traffic to add some light trails along the bottom of the image, which I felt boosted the square on composition (which of course is not always recommended!).
