Description
This is a shot of an American Civil War canon being fired during a reenactment in Pontachoula, Louisiana, in 2011.
We didnt set out to go see a civil war reenactment; actually we had just decided to take a drive into deepest Louisiana to see to swamps and basically just wander about. However, when we happened upon Pontachoula there was a sign advertising the imminent gala event. I have to admit that as a non-American I found it to be a peculiar event, but one that the local people were not just enthused by, but seemed utterly devoted to the cause. You can argue about the motivation behind 21st century support for the Confederate State, but you cant argue with the spectacle it was quite entertaining.
I really wanted to get this cannon fire shot, so I set myself up some distance away and used a 300mm lens, with a fast shutter speed. I was lucky to be using Nikon D300 with a burst rate that made such a shot possible. I was particularly excited to have caught this image, with the canon fire shooting into the air like this.
