Description
One of the aspects of New Orleans that so intrigues me is the architecture; and the way the quaint nature of the city it is embodied in the shot-gun style homes. Shot-guns were named for those homes that were much longer than they were wide. The purpose was to get around a property tax that was based upon the square footage of the front faade of the house. By building the house longer, the overall size of the property could be maintained without increasing dues. What intrigues may is the way that this was also incorporated into the more opulent residences of the Marigny including this one on Esplanade Avenue. It suggested a commonality between the classes in New Orleans which manifests itself in many more ways than this one.
However, there was another reason that this shot found its way into my collection. The shot has actually been used in Holywood films, including more recently, its appearance in the Curious Case of Benjamin Button, when it deputized as the Button family home.
This image was taken during a walk around the Marigny in Spring 2010, when the music of the French Quarter fest was all around and the Spirit of New Orleans was difficult to shake off.
