Description
Having spent a few years photographing bridges on the lower Mississippi River, I have come to believe that these huge truss bridge engineering styles have become something of a signature image of southern Louisiana river crossings.
These truss structures tend to be as big as they are to facilitate the passage of ocean going tanker vessels on this river; a river with a particular large variation in seasonal water levels. However, interestingly, the bridges north of Louisiana are not so large, despite the river being enabling navigation of such vessels. As I understand it, this is the work of Huey P. Long a past Governor of Louisiana. Apparently he authorized the construction of bridges with a lower clearance in northern Louisiana to ensure that all international shipping traffic found its way no further north than Baton Rouge!
These particular truss bridges were found crossing the Mississippi River between Natchez, in the state of Mississippi, and Vidalia, in the state of Louisiana. There doesnt seem to be a great deal of demand for two of these mammoth bridges as both towns dont seem especially busy. Regardless, the sight of both structures is quite impressive and definitely a fun and interesting subject for my camera.
