Having spent a few years photographing bridges on the lower Mississippi River, I have come to believe that these huge truss bridge engineering styles have become something of a signature image of southern Louisiana river crossings.
These truss structures tend to be as big as they are to facilitate the passage of ocean going tanker vessels on this river; a river with a particular large variation in seasonal water levels. However, interestingly, the bridges north of Louisiana are not so large, despite the river being enabling navigation of such vessels. As I understand it, this is the work of Huey P. Long � a past Governor of Louisiana. Apparently he authorized the construction of bridges with a lower clearance in northern Louisiana to ensure that all international shipping traffic found its way no further north than Baton Rouge!
