Artist's Description

It�s not always easy to describe the architecture of the French Quarter in New Orleans, and it is no different when trying to communicate its appeal. It is certainly archaic, quaint, and steeped in a colourful history. Unlike the very boring grid layout of the French Quarter though, it is almost as if the Vieux Carre buildings were put together without any kind of planning.

Look at this doorway, for instance. It�s a simple and weather-worn structure. However, I have to wonder whether it has altered in appearance at all in the past several generations years. The beaten up pavement, the immaculate pointing of the brickwork, and the interesting looking cracks which the door seems to display almost with a sense of pride. These are the kinds of tiny details that makes it impossible for any photographer to walk the French Quarter and be home before dinner!
