Artist's Description
This is one of the iconic symbols of New Orleans � the stern wheel of one of the paddle steamships. Amazingly, and even sadly, there are only two working stern wheelers plying their trade on the Mississippi River today. They are both in New Orleans � the Creole Queen and the Natchez, which take tourists on daily trips down Old Man River to Chalmette and back. The other stern wheelers in the USA either use the wheel as a prop (and not as a means of propulsion) or are permanently moored and acting as casinos and restaurants.
Further, such is the rarity of these vessels, that even the Creole Queen is diesel powered, leaving the Natchez as the sole symbol of this once iconic and plentiful sight on the famous Mississippi River. Therefore, although the paddle wheels are synonymous with the south and the Mississippi delta, my personal opinion is that they are more closely associated with the Big Easy.
