Description
In the United States at least, fireworks are most often associated with the 4th July holidays; that much nobody would really argue with! Fireworks also have an uncanny tendency to capture the imagination of adults in such a way the every Independence Day holiday is followed by a flood of fireworks images appearing in social media feeds up and down the country! So, I thought, why not join in and publish some images of my own?
Before this shot, my most recent fireworks photographs were taken with experience of such photography was not very well developed. I have since viewed many fireworks images, and started to think about what camera settings should be applied to get this most imaginative shots. I would say that it depends on what type of images you are attempting to shoot, as it is a simple fact that your camera will see an entirely different image than your own eyes see. We see fireworks in an infinite number of instant images; by that I mean that we see the progress of the fireworks fall across the sky and create a snapshot in our own heads. The camera see something entirely different. There is a tendency to let the shutter stay open for a much longer period, and what it produces is a series of light trails. You must ask the question, however - is this what we really want from our fireworks images, or do we want to see something more representative of your own vision? I would suggest that it is very easy to go overboard and leave the shutter open for 10 seconds or so, and produce less than sterling results. This shot was taken with just a 4 second exposure, which I am now beginning to believe is just the right balance between capturing enough of the light and reproducing all that we love from from fireworks shots.
