Description
This is an image taken from the top of Grandfather Mountain. Well, strictly speaking, it is not at the peak, it is very near the top; on the other side of the famous swinging bridge that take visitors from a mountaintop plateau to a perfectly place outcrop. From this outcrop some stunning views of the north west North Carolina reach of the Blue Ridge Mountains can be afforded.
If you catch the weather just right, those views can be simply outstanding; looking south and west across and seemingly endless carpet of rolling woodland hilltops. It is particularly so in the summer, when the humidity and thunderstorms will produce some stunning misty scenes. You do have to be careful, however, not to get caught out by one of those storms at the top of the mountain!
This particular view was taken in November 2007, at the height of the glorious fall colors season, when the treetops below will be awash with brilliant yellows, reds, and browns. As you can see, though, this is a black and white image, which I felt worked better with the dark tones that come with the bright mid-day sunshine.
I have since been back to Grandfather Mountain a few times, but have never again experienced such clear skies as with this shot. I will, though, persevere with this fabulous mountain vista at the very least, the drive up along the Blue Ridge Parkway and the winding road up to the top of the mountain are worth the trip in their own right.
