Description
It seems to me that the weather is never really an inhibiting factor when it comes to photography, and that this also applies to Bourbon Street, in the New Orleans French Quarter. In 2010, we happened to venture down to the Vieux Carre on a whim, even though there was a steady rain on that particular Spring Saturday afternoon.
While wondering along Bourbon Street I happened to take this shot, fully intending to capture the vibrant image of the neon lit strip, undeterred by the rain. However, when I came to edit this shot, I was quite taken by this black and white version of it. For me, it seemed to speak of an entirely different era in the French Quarter, when Bourbon Street was less focused on showing out of town revelers a good time, and more intent on being the more seedy and risqu underworld that gave rise to its more historic reputation.
I must admit, I was fortunate that the person with the umbrella walked across the street and into the frame. I certainly seems to add more of a foreground focus to this image, one that can often be difficult to achieve with Bourbon Street shots that are composed from this position.
This image was taken with a Nikon D300, Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8, ad processed in ACR and Photoshop CS4. April, 2010.
