Description
This is one of the more famous landmarks on St Charles Avenue in Uptown New Orleans – the Sacred Heart School for Girls. This image was taken with a Nikon D300 camera in November 2011.
The high school campus is located between Napoleon Avenue and Upperline in the heart of the Garden District. Set back from this famous American thoroughfare, this can be quite an imposing but beautiful structure.
This Roman Catholic school was founded by Saint Philippine Duchesne in 1886, and now is just one of many campus’ in the Uptown area. Like many other of these grand Greek Revival style structures on St Charles Avenue, it is a difficult subject to photograph using the normal conventions that make a great image. However, as with other subject on this famous street, the distracting Live Oaks and the large set back from the main road can be used to great effect. In this particular case, I used the expansive canopy of the Live Oak trees to frame the grand old building, allowing some general shots of the architectural details to be shot with a more pleasing result.
