Description
This is a view of the Butt of Lewis, a quite spectacular set of cliffs that overlook the northern most coast of the Isle of Lewis, in the Scottish Outer Hebrides. So rugged and dangerous is this stretch of the coastline, that this working lighthouse is very much required.
I didnt know much about this little gem on the Outer Hebrides until earlier the previous day when we were looking at postcards and souvenirs on another part of the island. The photographers had the waves, with a long exposure, absolutely battering the cliff face and I insisted to my wife that we simply had to get up there so I could take a look myself. It was a slow 30 mile drive, along a narrow one-carriageway country road, but it was certainly worth it. I managed to get a little different a perspective with this HDR image. The waves were not quite as dramatic as I had seen them in other shots, but nevertheless, it was certainly no place to get caught in a vessel.
The site itself was extremely picturesque. We managed to walk half a mile or so down the coast, over a very pleasant green field above the cliff face. My only complaint about our trip up here was that we did not see the whales that had been promised to us by the hotel owner down in Aird Uig, but in the grand scheme of things, that wasnt so bad.
