Artist's Description
For me over the years, New Year�s Eve has not generally been spent in the great outdoors, especially not with the sun about to go down. More likely, I would be found in a bar, or busy getting ready for �the Bells� (as we say in Scotland). In 2013, it was quite different. We took a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway in north west North Carolina with the specific aim of getting some shots of the sun setting on the year. This particular shot, and HDR image, was taken from the parkway just beneath Grandfather Mountain, as the road winds round from the east towards the Linn Cove viaduct. This was as much as I was hoping for from this shot: a rich colourful sky, some nice detail in the forest foreground, and a well defined horizon.
