Artist's Description

Hadrian’s Wall was originally constructed as a Roman Empire defensive fortification; with the popular opinion being that it was to protect the empire from northern Brits, or more specifically “marauding Scot”. With a 2,000 year history though, it is probably safe to say that we don’t really know if the modern day historical account is truly representative of the motivations of second century Romans! Regardless, this is a fine example, and an amazingly well preserved one at that, of an ancient roman Fort. Even the toilets are well preserved as this site, making it as easy it is anywhere, to image roman life in these barracks; sitting high on an escarpment looking out over northern England.
Despite it’s reputation as a focal point of the divide between the Scots and the English, Hadrian’s Wall is not really representative of the border between these two constituent countries of the United Kingdom. The route runs between Carlisle and Newcastle which, for much of the route, is quit...
