Description
I am not sure that the proprietorship of the Holy Name of Jesus church actually outdates the St Charles Avenue streetcar by too many generations. The streetcars themselves probably have just as long, glorious, and interesting a history as the background image to this shot.
Taken on a warm and sunny November afternoon in 2011, this was a shot that I had definitely planned, but it did take four or five passes of a streetcar before this downtown bound trolley stopped just where I wanted it, and for long enough for me to be able to compose this shot. Its a simple streetcar shot: no low light effects, no drooping Spanish moss, etc, but it is one which I wanted.
This very much a vintage trolley, which unbelievably dates back to the 1920s. I am not sure why they havent been modernized over the decades: perhaps to preserve the history of the line? Regardless, as a tourist and a one time citizen of Orleans Parish, I am mighty glad that they have persevered in their current condition. It certainly adds significantly to the character of the uptown New Orleans area which was demonstrated so vividly when their long awaited return (after Hurricane Katrina) came around in late 2007.
