Artist's Description
In the late summer of 2008, we took a trip on an air boat out on Lake Salvador, in the swamps deep in the south east of Louisiana, far into the wetlands south of New Orleans. Normally on these air boat rides (very loud!) the tour guide will use the age old trick of tempting these magnificent reptiles out of their underwater hiding places with marshmallow treats. On this particular occasion, though, there was a hurricane out in the Gulf of Mexico (Gustav for those that remember) and we were told by the tour guide that the local wildlife could sense this and would tend to stay secluded in preparation for the incoming storm. This meant that the alligator shows would be thin in the ground. However, as we were waiting patiently in the boat, this particular alligator surfaced vertically, quite unexpectedly, quite in the same manner as you would see a submarine surface on the ocean surface. Hence, the name of this image: Surface! Surface! I guess the marshmallows were too good to resist,...
