Artist's Description

This is a shot of the Kelpies, taken at sunset at the Helix visitor centre, central Scotland. The Forth and Clyde canal historically linked west and east Scotland and was a vital part of Scottish industrial infrastructure in prior centuries. The canals were worked with barges, and were propelled by powerful horses (The Kelpies) who pulled their cargo along using the adjacent toepaths. With the opening of the Forth and Clyde canal again for navigation, there has been a growth in monuments and visitor attractions paying testimony to this rich part of Scotlands heritage. The Kelpies, 30 meter high steel horse head sculptures, are a part of that. The monuments opened in 2014 and I managed to get a shot that winter, just as the warm colours of the briefest of sunsets interrupted what was otherwise a rainy and cloudy day in central Scotland.
