Description
This show was actually taken during Carnival season in New Orleans, at the start of one of the evening parades. I’ve always been a fan of the sunsets in New Orleans, and the Gulf Coast of Mexico in general, and I’ve always taken every chance to take a shot – even when focused on something else, like Mardi Gras. This one was taken in Mid-City during one of the big super parades. The golden colours of the sunset looked magnificent, particularly when set against a silhouetted telegraph mast. These power lines are quite common in the south, and it seems like an archaic design given that the region is so vulnerable to hurricanes and lightning strikes and it is no surprise that the relative lack of sub-surface power often leads to power cuts. I would guess that placing them underground would not work with the high water table of this poorly draining city. It definitely adds a sense of character to the city though. It wouldn’t be the same sitting out in the sun at and outdoor café without that buzzing of power running overhead to the streetcorner.
